In recent stainless steel news, South Korea's Posco won three medals for new stainless steel technologies at the Stainless Steel Industry Awards held at the non-profit international association Worldstainless in Brussels earlier this month.

South Korea's Posco said the latest feat was another recognition of its technical prowess after winning a gold medal at the same award last year.

This year, South Korea's POSCO was the only company to win all three medals (gold, silver and bronze) in the new stainless steel technology category.

Founded in 1996, Worldstainless is an international association to discuss and exchange information on global stainless steel market challenges and industry trends.

South Korea's Posco won the gold medal for its high-strength 430 DP duplex stainless steel for large and high-end household appliances; the silver medal for its 316HN (high nitrogen) non-magnetic and high-strength austenitic stainless steel for mobile equipment; it is mainly used in air-conditioning and refrigeration Bronze Medal for Stainless Steel Low Cost Brazing Filler Metal for Fluid Pipeline.

430DP duplex stainless steel, a material jointly developed with Samsung Electronics, is 50% stronger despite being 20% thinner. Since 430DP duplex stainless steel can withstand severe dents and scratches, it is expected that this stainless steel material will be supplied to the exterior use of high-end appliances within this year, such as the doors of high-end refrigerators. Starting with the latest collaboration, South Korea's Posco said it plans to expand its partnership with Samsung to develop high-performance and environmentally friendly materials that will also help reduce carbon emissions.

Silver award-winning 316HN austenitic stainless steel is designed to prevent camera failure in mobile devices by shielding electromagnetic waves from attached sensors. The stainless steel material is expected to be used more widely in high-end smartphones and foldable phones with upgraded cameras.

A low-cost brazing filler metal that earned a bronze medal uses more copper but less silver, reducing costs by more than 80%.
